about the artist
Born in Toowoomba, Queensland, a significant portion of Mitchell’s career began in Brisbane, where she grew up investing the majority of her youth in developing her practice of underwater digital photography.
Her contemporary photographic art invites viewers to immerse themselves in an underwater world, where female figures are suspended in surreal and mindful constructs. Her work celebrates femininity with a commitment to portraying women in beautiful and empowering settings. Beth's artistry has evolved to explore themes of culture, nature, and social issues, conveying intimate and emotive stories through her technical mastery.
In 2021, Mitchell won the title of the "Brisbane Portrait Prize" with her photographic self-portrait "No Land in Sight," receiving a $50,000 acquisitive award. In 2022, her film "The Holocene" was commissioned by the Brisbane City Council and is now part of their permanent outdoor digital collection.
Inspired by the oceanic landscapes around Victoria, which informed her experimental work between 2021-2023, Beth reveals her immersion in captivating underwater environments.
Currently based back in Queensland, she is poised to continue developing these new works, capturing her subjects in a variety of aquatic landscapes.
